Hey there,
It's the Frontier Fisherman here, and I’ve been on these Alaskan waters long enough to know that your gear is only as good as you treat it. I’ve seen reels fall apart after one season, and others that last a lifetime—difference is, the care you put into ‘em. So, let me tell you, here are five ways to make sure your reels don’t give up on you when that fish of a lifetime bites. Take it from me, you’ll want to keep your gear running smooth.
Alaska’s waters can be brutal on your gear. Saltwater, dirt, and debris can work their way into the internal components of your reel faster than a pink run up the Kenai. After every trip, give your reel a good rinse with fresh water. I’m talking about a gentle rinse—don’t go spraying it with a high-pressure hose or you’ll force dirt and grime deeper inside.
Once you’ve rinsed it, dry it off with a clean cloth. This simple step will prevent corrosion and keep your reel performing like it should.
If you're looking to up your game with professional-grade maintenance tools, check out the reel maintenance kits we offer both in-store and online. Or, bring your reel into our Tackle Repair Center and let our experts give it the care it deserves!
Your reel’s gears, bearings, and handles need a little TLC too. Use a high-quality reel oil and grease to lubricate the moving parts—just a couple drops will do the trick. Too much oil and you’ll attract dirt, which can lead to gumming up the works. Pay special attention to the handle, spool, and bail hinges.
A well-lubricated reel is like a well-oiled machine—it’ll keep running smooth, even after countless casts.
Need some top-notch reel oil? We’ve got you covered—swing by the shop or order your reel oil and grease online! And if you'd rather leave the maintenance to the pros, our Tackle Repair Center is here to get your reel prepped for the next season.
Over time, those screws on your reel can work themselves loose. Every so often, take a minute to check for loose screws and tighten them up. You don’t want to find out your reel’s coming apart mid-fight with a sockeye. While you’re at it, check the drag system—make sure it’s operating smoothly. If the drag isn’t working right, it could cost you a fish.
Once break-up hits and it’s time to hang up your gear for the winter, make sure you store those reels properly. Back off the drag completely to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the drag washers. Store your reels in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and moisture. I like to wrap mine in soft cloths or keep them in protective cases to prevent scratches or dust from settling in.
Your reel isn’t the only thing that needs attention—your line can take a beating too. Whether you’re using braid, mono, or fluoro, check for any nicks, abrasions, or weak spots. If you find any, it’s time to change out that line. Don’t cheap out here—a bad spot in your line can cost you the fish of a lifetime. Trust me, I’ve seen it happen.
Once you’ve picked out the perfect line, swing by our shop for FREE line winding on our industrial winding machines. Whether you’re gearing up for halibut or kings, we’ll get your reels ready to roll.
Maintaining your reel is all about being ready. When the fish are biting, you don’t want to be fussing over gear that should’ve been taken care of before the season even started. With a little effort, you’ll get years of reliable service out of your reels, and when you’re fighting a big halibut or king salmon, you’ll be glad you put in the work.
So there you have it, five ways to keep your reels in shape and ready for whatever these waters throw at you. You look after your gear, and it’ll look after you.
