Chum salmon—affectionately called dog salmon across Alaska—are known for their sheer power and explosive runs. While their table reputation varies depending on where and when they’re caught, their aggressive fight and reliable late-summer runs make them a favorite target for anglers who enjoy a challenge.
You’ll find chum salmon in rivers, sloughs, estuaries, and nearshore saltwater from Western Alaska to Southeast, with peak fishing typically in July through early September. They respond well to bright spinners, flashy jigs, twitching gear, and bold flies, especially pinks, purples, and chartreuse patterns.
Gear up at B&J Sporting Goods and get ready to meet one of Alaska’s hardest-fighting salmon species head-on.
