Howdy,
There’s a certain kind of excitement that rolls through Alaska when the hooligan show up.
You won’t see it on a calendar.
You won’t get a polite notice in the mail.
But if you’ve been around long enough, you’ll feel it.
Rivers start to move different.
Seagulls get loud.
And suddenly, folks start showing up with buckets, boots, and nets in hand.
That’s hooligan season.
And if you’ve never been part of it before—well, you’re in for something special.
Hooligan—also called eulachon, candlefish, or grease fish—are small, oily fish that run in huge numbers in the spring.
And when I say huge… I mean you’re not fishing one at a time.
You’re scooping.
They’re prized for a few reasons:
This is freezer-filling fishing at its finest.
Around Southcentral Alaska, hooligan runs typically kick off April into May, depending on water conditions.
Popular areas include:
Here’s the thing though—
Hooligan don’t run on your schedule.
You’ve got to be ready when they show.
This isn’t rod-and-reel fishing.
This is hands-on, boots-in-the-water, get-it-done fishing.
All you need is:
Stand in the current, dip your net, and scoop with the flow.
When they’re running strong?
You won’t be waiting long.
Now don’t overcomplicate this—but don’t cheap out either.
A good hooligan net should be:
This is one of those times where the right tool makes all the difference between “this is fun” and “why am I doing this?”
A few things I’ve learned over the years:
And maybe most important…
Don’t overthink it.
Hooligan season isn’t just about the fish.
It’s about Alaska.
It’s about showing up when something wild and seasonal happens—and being part of it.
Families come out.
Kids get their hands dirty.
Freezers get filled.
Stories get told.
This is the kind of fishing that sticks with you.
If you’ve never chased a hooligan run before, this is your year.
Grab a net.
Watch the water.
And when it happens—don’t hesitate.
Because when the hooligan show up…
You’d better be ready to scoop.
See you on the water,
The Frontier Fisherman
