Howdy,
They say I’ve been around these waters long enough to know a thing or two about lines and what it takes to land the big ones. If you’re planning on going after Alaska’s giants—whether it's halibut or king salmon—you better have the right line on your reel. So let me share with you the secrets to picking the perfect line for the fight ahead.
When you’re after Alaska’s giants—think halibut or king salmon—braided line is your best friend. It’s incredibly strong for its diameter, meaning you can load a lot of line onto your reel without sacrificing strength. It’s also sensitive, so you’ll feel even the lightest nibbles. But keep in mind, braid has almost no stretch, so when you set that hook, you’ve got to be ready for a fight. It’s great for deep water, jigging for halibut, cod and, rockfish. When fishing in clear water however, adding a little stretch into the system can be forgiving. Heck, to avoid spooking the fish, you might also need to tie on a mono or fluorocarbon leader.
Brands worth looking into:
Mono is the jack-of-all-trades when it comes to fishing line. It’s got good stretch, which is perfect when you’re fighting a fish that likes to make those sudden, head-shaking runs. It’s also a bit more forgiving if your drag isn’t set perfectly. Mono’s buoyancy makes it great for topwater fishing, but it can struggle in deeper waters where you need that line to sink faster or when diameter becomes an issue due to drag from the current. For general salmon and trout fishing in rivers, mono is a solid choice.
Brands worth looking into:
Fluoro is nearly invisible underwater, which makes it ideal for targeting fish in clear, shallow rivers or lakes. It sinks faster than mono and is abrasion-resistant, meaning it’ll hold up better when you’re fishing around rocks or other structure. While fluoro is strong and stealthy, it can be a bit more expensive. But when the fish are finicky, fluoro can give you the edge you need to get those bites.
Brands worth looking into:
When it comes to pound test, it all depends on what you’re targeting. For smaller trout or Dolly Varden, you might get away with 4 to 12 lb test. But for big kings or halibut, you’re going to need 30 to 50 lb test, minimum. Don’t skimp on line capacity either. Make sure your reel can hold enough line to handle long runs—especially with kings or halibut, which can strip hundreds of yards of line before they tire out.
Once you’ve selected the perfect line for your intended target species, the crew at B&J's in-store Fishing Counter can expedite the amount of time required to load your reel.
